SKATING THROUGH ADVERSITY: Palestine’s Resilience on Four Wheels

The Power of Skateboarding in Building Mental Health and Hope Amidst Conflict

Skateboarding is more than just a sport... it’s a lifeline to some, a way to reclaim joy, build resilience, and find connection in even the toughest circumstances. For Aram Sabbah, a Palestinian skateboarder and advocate, skateboarding serves not only as a form of self-expression but also as a powerful tool for mental well-being and a means of representing his people’s strength. His participation in the Dubai Olympic qualifier isn’t just about competition, it’s a testament to the transformative power of movement, purpose, and hope.

Aram Sabbah’s journey to the Dubai Olympic qualifier reflects a powerful intersection of sport and activism. Competing in a T-shirt that read “Palestine” in bold Arabic typography, the 26-year-old saw this international stage as an opportunity to share the resilience of his people. “You pick yourself up each time you fall. In Palestine, we do this day-to-day,” Sabbah said, emphasizing the parallels between skateboarding and life in a region marked by struggle.

As a member of SkatePal, a UK-based nonprofit, Sabbah works tirelessly to build skateparks in the West Bank. These parks aren’t just places to skate: they’re sanctuaries where children and families can experience moments of joy and freedom. Sabbah describes skateboarding as a way to express both sadness and joy, creating an emotional outlet that fosters resilience. For children especially, these spaces are a reminder that even small moments of play can have a big impact on mental health, offering a sense of normalcy amidst conflict.

The ongoing Israel-Gaza war has deeply affected the Palestinian skateboarding community. Sabbah speaks of the guilt many skaters feel for enjoying their passion while others endure immense hardship. This internal conflict highlights a universal mental health challenge: balancing personal joy with collective grief. Despite these feelings, Sabbah’s determination to compete underscores the importance of finding purpose and holding space for hope. “Just being here, no matter the results, already means a lot,” he reflects.

Sabbah’s story also challenges misconceptions about Palestinians, showing the world that they are more than numbers or headlines. His efforts to connect with fellow skaters and introduce Palestinian children to the sport demonstrate how skateboarding can serve as a bridge between communities. It’s a powerful reminder that movement, connection, and purpose are essential tools for healing... not just individually, but collectively.

Through his work with SkatePal and his presence on the international stage, Sabbah embodies the resilience and hope that skateboarding brings to Palestinian youth. His story is a testament to how something as simple as a skateboard can create ripples of empowerment, healing, and solidarity in a world that desperately needs it.

Rajab Al-Reefi: Bringing Hope to Gaza Through Skateboarding

While Aram Sabbah’s story embodies the resilience of the West Bank, Rajab Al-Reefi’s work in Gaza is a powerful reminder of the enduring strength of Palestinian youth, even in the most challenging circumstances. As a leader of the Gaza Skate Team, Rajab has been steadfast in his commitment to bringing skateboarding to the children of Gaza, despite the constant threat of violence and instability. This past year, Rajab has been busy building ramps and teaching skateboarding classes to young children in the Gaza Strip, offering them not just a sport, but a way to reclaim joy and find a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos of war.

For the children in Gaza, skateboarding becomes a tool for emotional release and healing, offering them an outlet to express themselves in a place where freedom and security are in short supply. As Rajab continues his work in such dire conditions, he demonstrates the incredible resilience of both the children he teaches and the community he’s built. Skateboarding in Gaza is about much more than learning a new skill—it’s about giving children the opportunity to experience play, joy, and connection, which are essential for mental health and well-being. Rajab’s ability to keep going, despite the war surrounding him, serves as an act of resistance and a beacon of hope for his students. He offers them not only the skills to skate but also the courage to rise above their circumstances, showing them that even in the darkest times, there is room for hope and joy.

His dedication to bringing skateboarding to Gaza doesn’t just build physical spaces—it creates emotional ones as well, where children can find solace, community, and a sense of purpose. Rajab’s efforts continue to inspire, proving that even in the face of unimaginable adversity, the spirit of skateboarding and its power to heal remains unshaken. Like Aram, Rajab understands that skateboarding is more than a sport—it’s a vital tool for mental health, resilience, and the restoration of hope, even when the world feels broken.

Inspiring Change, One Skateboard at a Time

Both Aram and Rajab's stories are a testament to the profound impact of skateboarding on mental health in communities that are suffering from ongoing conflict. Their work highlights how skateboarding can transcend its role as a recreational activity to become a powerful tool for healing, resilience, and community building. It offers a much-needed escape from the harsh realities of war, while also providing a space for emotional release and self-expression. These skateboarders are not just athletes... they are agents of change, bringing hope and solidarity to Palestinian youth and the world at large.

Through their stories, we are reminded that even in the face of adversity, joy, hope, and connection are possible. Skateboarding is a symbol of resilience and empowerment, helping to foster a sense of agency in children and adults alike, even in the most trying circumstances. Whether in the West Bank or Gaza, skateboarding continues to serve as a bridge to mental well-being and a reminder that, despite the challenges of life, there is always room for hope, joy, and the healing power of movement.
